Local Children's Author at Library on October 24th

The Destin Library will host a children’s program with local author Barbara Marunowski on Saturday, October 24th, at 10:00 am in the Calhoun Room. The program is free and open to the public. The program will conclude with a question and answer session with the author. Copies of the author’s book will be available for sale at this program.

Barbara Marunowski, a local business owner, was born in Colorado and grew up in Arizona. Her love for poetry and short stories was inspired by her life growing up in the great outdoors of the southwest United States. Her interest in writing was encouraged by her father who had given her a book at an early age about writing for children.

Many years later her now grown twin sons encouraged her to finally write a children’s book. They suggested that the book be based on a story she had told them during one of their long family vacations … “where cows came from”. Marunowski’s book My Cow Book is an out-growth of her sons’ suggestion.

Further information about the program or the author is available at the library (837-8572).

Celebrate Earth Day at the Library

On Wednesday, April 22nd, the Destin Library invites all patrons to observe and explore the history of Earth Day by commemorating the 39th annual celebration of this day through print and electronic resources that are available at the library.

In 1970 Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, proposed the first nationwide environmental protest “to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda.”

On April 22nd, 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment.

The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species acts.

This year over a billion people worldwide will convene at events in communities, schools, parks, and churches from Beijing, China to Tokyo, Japan to Sao Paulo, Brazil to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to let local and national governments know that action must be taken immediately on global warming.

In addition, citizens of all ages within our community are encouraged to join in on the Green Generation Campaign (www.earthday.net/greengeneration) that will culminate on the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day in 2010.

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

It was March 2nd, 1904 that Theodore Seuss Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. Today we pay tribute to Dr. Seuss' 105th birthday.

While most commonly known for his children's books (he wrote over 60 of them), “Dr.” Seuss was both the editor-in-chief of the college newspaper and also drew more than 400 political cartoons in two years for a New York daily newspaper. It was as a college student at Dartmouth that he started signing his work “Seuss.” Once he graduated, he started signing his work as
"Dr. Seuss” when submitting it to a humor magazine. After marrying, he continued to write humor and illustrate. When World War II started, he began his political cartooning. Eventually he designed and illustrated posters to support the war effort, and joined the U.S. Army where he was the leader of the animation department.
Still, it was his children's books that have helped beginning readers and have been enjoyed by families for several generations.

What's your favorite Dr. Seuss title?
