On Wednesday, April 22nd, the Destin Library invites all patrons to observe and explore the history of Earth Day by commemorating the 39th annual celebration of this day through print and electronic resources that are available at the library.
In 1970 Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, proposed the first nationwide environmental protest “to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda.”
On April 22nd, 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment.
The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species acts.
This year over a billion people worldwide will convene at events in communities, schools, parks, and churches from Beijing, China to Tokyo, Japan to Sao Paulo, Brazil to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to let local and national governments know that action must be taken immediately on global warming.
In addition, citizens of all ages within our community are encouraged to join in on the Green Generation Campaign (www.earthday.net/greengeneration) that will culminate on the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day in 2010.
