Applebees Supports Summer Reading

This summer children ages 13 and younger will have a reading partner at the Destin Library thanks to local Applebee’s Neighborhood Restaurants. Concord Neighborhood Group, of Lincoln, Nebraska, has supplied the Destin Library with Summer Reading Program coupons that can be redeemed at local Applebee’s restaurants (Destin, Pensacola and Crestview) for a free Kid’s Meal.

According to Will Rogers, Reference and Youth Services librarian at the Destin Library, “children participating in the program must read 10 books during the summer-time period and then complete a special 2009 Summer Reading Log (Click here to download) before receiving their coupon.” 2009 Summer Reading Logs are available at the circulation desk at the Destin Library.

“Support for summer-time reading programs for children and young adults is a welcomed gift from our local businesses” Rogers said.

Area businesses interested in supporting summer-time or event specific programming for children and young adults at the Destin Library are encouraged to call Will Rogers at 837.8572.

National Library Week: April 11 - 18

National Library Week, April 11th – 18th, is a time to celebrate the contributions of libraries, librarians and library workers in schools, campuses and communities nationwide – and the perfect time to connect to the world @ your library.

The Destin Library will celebrate National Library Week by asking patrons to submit their all-time favorite authors or book titles. The tally of ballots submitted will be announced April 17th.

“Every day libraries in cities, small towns, colleges, schools and in businesses help transform their communities,” says Jurate Burns, Director of the Destin Library. “At our library, people of all backgrounds can come together for community meetings, lectures and programs, to do research, to look for a job or check out books, DVD’s, books on tape or read area newspapers”, Burns says.

First celebrated in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.

Celebrate Earth Day at the Library

On Wednesday, April 22nd, the Destin Library invites all patrons to observe and explore the history of Earth Day by commemorating the 39th annual celebration of this day through print and electronic resources that are available at the library.

In 1970 Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, proposed the first nationwide environmental protest “to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda.”

On April 22nd, 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment.

The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species acts.

This year over a billion people worldwide will convene at events in communities, schools, parks, and churches from Beijing, China to Tokyo, Japan to Sao Paulo, Brazil to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to let local and national governments know that action must be taken immediately on global warming.

In addition, citizens of all ages within our community are encouraged to join in on the Green Generation Campaign (www.earthday.net/greengeneration) that will culminate on the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day in 2010.
