Volunteers Needed!!!


The Destin Library is looking for interested persons wishing to volunteer for its Fall 2009/Spring 2010 instructional computer program.

Individuals interested in assisting with this program should posses intermediate skills using the Windows XP operating system and at least one other application program (Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher, Internet Explorer) for instructional purposes. In addition individuals with experience in creating and utilizing online interfaces such as Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, e-Bay, etc. or Digital Photography are encouraged to contact the library regarding possible workshop offerings.

Foreign Film Scheduled for August 25th


The Friends Guild of the Destin Library will sponsor a monthly movie night featuring an award winning independent and foreign film on designated evenings at 7:00pm. The next movie night date is August 25th. The program is free and open to the public. Films are unrated and directed toward mature audiences. Seating will be limited to 60 on a first-come, first-served basis.

Movie Title: Eldorado (78 minutes) (Belgium with English subtitles)
Director: Bouli Lanners

Synopsis: Yvan and Elie are two loners who wander aimlessly though their lives. Yvan is a quick-tempered 40-year-old vintage car dealer while Elie is a young burglar and ex-junkie. One day Yvan catches Elie trying to rob him. Instead of beating him up, he becomes strangely attached to him and agrees to drive him home to his parents in his old Chevrolet. Yvan and Elie are both nostalgic about lost relationships, which is what leads them to undertake a bizarre journey through a regions that is as spectacular as it is crazy. Both are trying to find the pieces of a puzzle that they want to put back together, but it might be too late.

Essay Contest Targets Middle and High School Students


In honor of National Inventors Month in August, Inventors Digest magazine and partners are sponsoring the 2059 Essay Contest for middle school and high school students.

The topic: What will the world look like in 2059?

In 1959, the internal pacemaker, the microchip, the Barbie doll and pantyhose were invented. Each was significant in its own right. But that was so 50 years ago.
Inventors Digest magazine challenges student to create an essay of 500 words or less describing what technology, tool, product or service will shape our lives in 2059 and why. The Grand Prize includes:

-A laptop computer
-Your essay published in Inventors Digest
-A year’s subscription to the magazine
-Possible appearance on the Emmy Award-winning PBS series Everyday Edisons
-A killer T-shirt
-Brain-teaser games

Eligibility: All middle school and high school students ages 12-17 in the United States. Grand prizes will be awarded for best middle school and high school entries.

Madden ’09 Tournament


The Destin Library, in conjunction with the Destin Recreation Department, will host a Madden ’09 Tournament on August 15, 2009. Video gamers of all ages will have the chance to test their toughness on the digital gridiron. Registration begins at 12:00 p.m. Kick-off is at 12:30 p.m.
